Toddler Days Out
There are lots of toddler days out for small children. I have a 2 year old son and I am always on the lookout for great things to do. We have been to quite a few tourist attractions with exhibits and events aimed at toddlers. I have tried and tested quite a few days out and having done some research here are 5 ideas of great attractions to visit with a toddler.
Farms
There are lots of small farms throught the country where toddlers can visit, see, smell and pet the animals. I live near Mudchute Farm in South East London which is free and has sheep, goats, cows, pigs, horses, rabbits, and birds.
For a more special family day out go to Hatton Farm Village at Hatton Country World in Warwickshire. You will find a farm with small animals that the children can feed and get close to but it's so much more than this. Hatton Farm Village is like a toddler paradise. There are trampolines and bouncy castles for the under 5s, toy tractors to ride on, a massive sandpit with lots of construction toys, small fairground rides, slides, swings, soft play and much more. It is quite expensive but worth it for a great day out.
Trains and railwaysThere are lots of steam trains and railways around the country and if you have a 2 year old toddler who is mad on trains like I do they will love a day out on a steam train. A really good day out is a trip on theRomney, Hythe and Dymchurch railway. It's a minature steam train which is perfect for a trip for kids. Park the car and take the train from Hythe to Dymchurch (about 20 minutes). Alight the train at Dymchurch and spend the day at the beach. We recently did this with our 2 year old and he loved it. They also have Thomas days at the railway where Thomas and the fat controller visit. Check out the website for more details.
AquariumsSmall children are fascinated by fish and you can't go wrong with an aquarium. There are lots of aquariums throughout the country and a quick google search will reveal the nearest one to you. We took our son to London Aquarium not long after he started walking and he loved it. He was just about the right height to see into the tanks and enjoyed looking at the tropical fish and sharks.
Zoos and Safari ParksToddlers are also fascinated by animals and there are lots of zoos and safari parks throughout the country. Many also have play areas and other attractions for toddlers. Some of the major ones include Bristol Zoo, Chester Zoo, West Midlands Safari Park and London zoo. We recently visited Battersea Children's Zoo and thought it was a great zoo to take a small child to. Our two year old loved it. There are no big animals but you will find farm animals, meerkats, monkeys, birds and mice. There's a nice play area too as well as a fire engine to sit in and a tractor to ride. Bigger children may get bored but it's lovely for really small children.
Beach, Parks and the Great OutdoorsTo be honest you don't need to spend a lot of money on giving your toddler a great day out. They say the best things in life are free and a day at the beach is often what my little boy enjoys most. There is nothing like running along the sand, building sandcastles, paddling and throwing pebbles in the sea. If you aren't near a beach, a picnic in a large park or in the countryside can be just as enjoyable. Collect leaves, jump in puddles, go to a playground, play football and just enjoy the fresh air.
