Fun Things to do with Toddlers When It's Raining
Talk about what you see
What animals are about? Can you see snails, slugs or frogs? Where are all the other animals hiding? Where are the birds?
Go puddle splashing.
Jump from puddle to puddle.
Have some umbrella fun.
Teach your toddler how to hold an umbrella. My son loves holding an umbrella and twirling it round. Try and get one with protectors on the umbrella ends. Try and catch raindrops with the umbrella.
Enjoy the raindrops
Catch raindrops with your tongue. How many can you count? Stop still and listen to the raindrops pitter pattering on different surfaces. Do they make different sounds when they land on different object? Also try to catch the raindrops on your hands, how quickly do your hands fill up with rain.
Let the rain fill up containers and watering cans
Then have fun pouring out the water. Give the plants a bit more to drink too. Or use the water to give the indoor plants a drink
Get the water table out
If you have a water table, your dress you little one up in their waterproofs and let him play with with the water table in the backyard. I used to do this, my toddler loved it but I would just watch him from my window with a hot drink in peace. A win win situation!
Get messy with mud pies
If you don't mind them getting a little bit messy, you can make mud pies. It goes without saying kids love this.
Enjoy the playground in the rain
The kids won't have to wait for the swings because most likely you'll be the only ones there. Make sure they are wearing their waterproofs because everything will be wet. Also just be extra careful not to slip on any steps etc. If you're worried you could avoid the climbing frames and the slides.
Have a water fight
Older kids will obviously love this, but you can have a gently splash with toddlers too. If you're game, let them splash you with the rain, they will love this!
Fun with water balloons
The great thing about when it's raining is that you know you're going to get wet, so you can do things you wouldn't do on other days like play with water balloons. Pre fill up some water balloons, take them outside and have fun smashing them on the ground. Or see how far you can through them.
Watch the water flow
You can have fun following where the water is following. Try and spot where the water is flowing down the street and then follow the little streams.
Play Energetic Games Indoors
The best ideas are the simple ones. I simply put on some energetic music and we jump, dance and run around the living room. It's good for me as I get a bit of exercise too.
Get a ball (a soft or a rubber one is best) and find some things to knock down. We usually build up towers with Mega Blocks, put them up in a row and try and knock them down with a ball. But, you could use empty fizzy pop bottles or whatever you can find around the house.
Hide and seek
Go and hide and get your toddler to find you. My son needs a bit of help finding me sometimes and I actually have to shout to let him know where I am but it gets him running around.
Build an obstacle course in your house
This may not be for everybody if you are not too keen on having your furniture clambered on by your toddler. We move the furniture around and create an obstacle course. Climb over and crawl under chairs. Put blankets between the sofas to crawl under. Crawl under tables and go around the house and do it again and again until they're tired.
Energetic nursery rhymes.
There are lots of energetic nursery rhymes. Toddlers love heads, shoulders, knees and toes. My son loves row. row, row your boat. Others include "When all the cows are sleeping" and "Hop little bunnies".
Get Out and About
Quieter Indoor Activities
Books. Have a reading 1/2 hour. Get out all the books and read them one after the other to your toddler.
Art and craft activities. Play doh is always great. Crayons and drawing are another simple but entertaining activity.
Cooking. Make a simple recipe. My 2 year old son loves making rice krispie cakes and spooning out the mixture into cake cases. They're a nice treat to share with friends or Daddy when he comes home.
Movies / TV - Don't feel bad about giving yourself a rest now and again and putting on some TV or a short movie. There's nothing better than getting cosy on the couch and enjoying some relaxing time.
