Lego Sets for Girls and Boys Aged 4
My son has always been a huge lego fan from when he was a toddler to age 4 and beyond (he's now 6). I now have a nephew who's 4 and who I am buying lego sets for this Christmas.
This article looks at the best lego sets available for 4 year olds based on what my own son has played with and the research I have done when buying for my nephew. It gives advice on specific lego sets for this age group too.

Lego Duplos Vs Standard Legos
There are two types of lego that are suitable for 4 year olds.
Lego duplo - these are bigger blocks than standard legos aimed at children aged 2 to 5. There are some really great new lego duplo sets (the creative cars set below is a really good one). My 6 year old has still actually had lots of fun playing with some of his younger brothers lego duplo sets. Therefore I would say that these are not too babyish for 4 year olds.
Lego - there are quite a few standard lego sets aimed at kids aged 4 and above. 4 year olds definitely have the fine motor skills to handle the smaller blocks so this is another option. At age 4, my son was really creative with the standard blocks and would build all kinds of things from his imagination too. He also received some lego sets which were designed for kids age 5 and above. He did need some help building these but they were a good project to work on with his Dad.
So, lego duplos or standard legos?
I think either would be appropriate. Look at the sets below and see which ones might excite the 4 year old you know. I would choose by the type or theme of set rather than the lego type.

Lego Duplo Sets for 4 Year Olds
These sets are actually recommended up to 3 years. There are tons of themed lego duplo sets that 4 year olds will love from pirates to fire engines to princess castles. There are quite a few Disney themed lego duplo sets including Disney princess, Jake and the Neverland pirates and Disney planes.
We actually bought the creative cars set for my 2 year old but my 6 year old absolutely loved them so I think many 4 year olds would too.

Standard Lego Sets
4 year olds are able to build and play with standard lego sets and the good thing about buying this type of lego is that it will last during the rest of their playing phase of childhood. We have sets bought from when my son was younger that we still build now. He also has a huge box of lego that he uses to build all kinds of structures when he plays.
At age 4, many boys love superheros (at least my nephew does - he was superhero mad!). So any lego car themed sets featuring superheros are often a good choice. This is why I've featured the spiderman set below.
