Five Books My 7 Year Old Loves
It wasn't long ago my 7 year old boy didn't enjoy independently at all. And then, I started reading a book to him at bedtime. When I said, lights out now, he didn't want me to stop reading this particular book. So, I let him read two more chapters on his own. Since then he hasn't stopped reading books. Do you want to know what this book was? Would you like some other suggestions of books for 7 year old boys. Then read on.
The Adventures Of Captain Underpants
My son loves the series of Captain Underpants books. The Adventures of Captain Underpants (the first one in the series) was the book that I read to him and that he didn't want to stop reading. Once he'd finished the first book in the series, he wanted to read the next one. And he continued reading all the books, until he had read every one in the series. And then he read them all again and again.

Why does he like the Captain Underpants books so much? Predominantly he loves the humor. The humor is set at the right level for 7 year old boys. He thinks they're funny and I enjoy hearing him laugh while he is reading. Quite often, he will stop me and read me a bit that he finds extra funny.
I also think the way the books are portrayed and put together are very visual and there are interactive fliparamas too. For example, there are parts written as comic strips and there are lots of pictures. The fliparamas are where you move the pages so it looks like the pictures are moving.

Miss Daisy Is Crazy by Dan Gutman
Once my son got hooked on Captain Underpants it was really hard to get him to read anything else but I managed to persuade him to listen to Miss Daisy is Crazy one night. And this, he finished off this book and others in the series.
Miss Daisy seems a bit dumb to the main character (AJ) who doesn't like school. |
But Miss Daisy confesses she doesn't like school either which surprises AJ. It also surprises AJ how much Miss Daisy doesn't know. The children have to explain lots of things to her!
Why did my son like Miss Daisy is Crazy?
I think he likes it because it's set in a school environment which is very familiar to him and so he can identify with the characters. My son actually likes school and he is very quick to give his opinions on why AJ thinks they way that he does. When we have read this book and other books in the series together it has brought up lots to talking points. The books are also funny (although the humor is more subtle - there's no belly laughs like Captain Undepants). But my son enjoys reading the books in this series and we are currently reading Mr Hynde is Out of His Mind.

Laugh Out Loud Jokes for Kids
As you've probably gathered my son likes humor in his reading so he loves reading laugh out loud jokes for kids. I don't think he's alone in the fact that many boys this age love funny books to read. The great thing about joke books for kids is that they are reading and learning new vocabulary but they are having so much fun they don't even realise it. My son loves to read jokes out to us and try and make us laugh.

Flat Stanley
This is one of my favorite books because I remember being read this as a child of 7 years old myself at school. It tells the story of a boy called Stanley and all the adventures he has after being flattened when a bulletin board fell on top of him.
It's a great first chapter book because the chapters are short and the perfect length for beginner chapter book readers |
. Again my son liked the humor element of the book but Flat Stanley goes on some great adventures too. Flat Stanley adjusts to his new life by going on adventures such as going on vacation by being sent through the mail in an envelope.
Magic Tree House
The Magic Tree House books are another great option of first chapter books with short chapters and lots of illustrations throughout the book. They mix fiction and non fiction and tell the story of two characters (Jack and his little sister Anne) who go back in time. The always start their adventure in a magic treehouse which is full of books.
My son does enjoy these books. They don't have the humor element of the other books but they are a great short read which are full of mystery and suspense. |
Other Books My 7 Year Old Has Enjoyed
There are lots and lots of other options that 7 year olds have loved. Here are a couple more ideas enjoyed by my 7 year old son.
The Adventures of Super Diaper Baby by Dav Pilkey (this is by the same author who wrote the Captain Underpants books and my son loved the two super diaper baby books as well).
Beast Quest by Adam Blade - I read many of the Beast Quest books to my son before we read Captain Underpants. He really enjoyed the books although he hasn't read any independently yet. The great thing about the Beast Quest books is that there are so many of them for boys to devour through. So if they get hooked, their reading is sorted for the next few months.
George's Marvellous Medicine and The Twits - I'm a big Roald Dahl fan, so have introduced the shorter Roald Dahl chapter books to my son who's enjoyed me reading them to him. The Twits is full of illustrations and is a good choice for 7 year old boys to try and read independently. If they're not quite ready you can read it to them.
